A Pumpkin Story

Happy 2010 everyone! Hope you all had an enjoyable holidays celebration. Our holidays were pretty nice, mostly quiet and relaxing. The girls had a great time as well. They each got a few new toys and some nommies, which they couldn't wait to tell you all about but will wait till Friday.

You may wonder what my post title is about. Here's the story:
Sometime late on Christmas eve, while watching an episode of "According to Jim" where Jim was eating a piece of pumpkin pie, hubby said to me:
M: "Did you get pumpkin pie for dinner for Christmas?"
Y: "Oh s***, I forgot all about it. I'll make one tomorrow morning."
M: "Ok, gotta have pumpkin pie."
Y: "I don't have any pumpkin puree but I'm sure Walmart will be open for a few hours, they were opened for Thanksgiving."

Early next morning(Christmas day), hubby headed out to Stewart's Shop(kinda like a general store, they are every where in NY) to get coffee, so I asked him to look for pumpkin puree. He came home empty handed because they didn't have any. So I decided to head out to Walmart, of course it's just my luck, Walmart was closed for Christmas. Crap! Then I remembered that Walgreens will be opened for Christmas, so I drove there(it's a good thing they are just close by, this is the only time I didn't wish to live in the country where there is no store for miles). Well, Walgreens didn't have any pumpkin puree but they did have Mrs. Smith brand frozen pie. You know what they say: "Desperate times call for desperate measures" - I bought a frozen pie. Eeeekkkkkk!!!!!! I guess frozen pumpkin pie is better than no pumpkin pie.

So after that episode, I have decided to plant pumpkin this summer. That way I will have pumpkin puree in my freezer, in case I forget to make a pumpkin pie again. Below are a few of my choices and I need your help to pick which one. I will set up a poll(on the left sidebar) and please vote for the pumpkin you think I should plant. Please vote by Noon on Wednesday, January 6th 2010. I will plant the one with the most votes. Please don't worry about not knowing anything about pumpkin. The ones I have selected are smaller size fruits(except for the Cinderella pumpkin) and they are good for pies.

Small Sugar Pumpkin, about 5-8 lbs. Please see Pinetree Garden Seeds for details.

Winter Luxury Pie Pumpkin, about 6lbs. Please see Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds for details.

Rouge Vif D'Etampes Pumpkin, also known as the Cinderella pumpkin. Please see Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds for details.

Orange Smoothie Pumpkin, about 7-8 lbs. Please see Pinetree Garden Seeds for details.

I know nothing of pumpkins. If you have room, I would plant a few of each and see which ones work best and taste the best. Sounds like fun. I can't wait to hear how it works out.

Julie, unfortunately I do not have room for all 4 varieties(yes, I know, I have a huge garden but what am I going to do with all the pumpkins?)

Hi YD and pups!!! I don't know a thing about making puree from pumpkins - a lot of "food" programs I've seen saaaaayyy..." the canned puree is as good or better than puree we can make ourselves from pumpkins, so that's the only way I've made pies. But I was FASCINATED by the gourds you chose - they all sound amazing, but for different reasons - color, date of founding, etc. Who knew? After reading everything, I decided to vote for the Winter Luxury Pie Pumpkin. They all really sound like great punkin' pie making fruit, but this one sounds best??? Good luck!

Yeay, pumpkins! How funny - we had decided to plant pumpkins too this summer!
Happy New Year to all of you - I will go vote now. Does Kane get a vote too? Or is this a household type vote? :-))))

Of course the Baker Creek pumpkins are in the lead! Woohoo! I'm all about the Luxury Pie pumpkin. I grew it years ago and it was very productive and delicious!

Hey,,Mrs. Smith is a pretty good cook and when you're down to the wire like that it's fine to me. You saved the time making it and the dishes you would have had to wash LOL!

I so wish we liked pumpkin ANYTHING! Growing them isn't hard, I've heard. And it would be awesome to use some fresh. Good for you to prepare in advance! Of course, it it werren't for Mrs. Smith, we'd probably never have any pie. =/

That is a nice idea to plant pumpkins. I look forward to hearing how you make the puree in the Fall :) I vote for the French pumpkin. I like how they described it, and it sounds like a nice history behind it.

P.S. Your new blog layout looks pretty!

I voted as Warren did for the same reason and they are heirloom but the first one looks good too and I'd consider. They are small and much easier to handle. You can also make pumpking pie with squash like buttercup or a hubbard and nobody will know the difference. I once read that much of the "canned" pumpkin is really squash but I've yet to see an ingredients label that discloses that. Now I always have to check.

LOL Even if WalMart was open, chances are you wouldn't have found pumpkin. Don't you know that there is a pumpkin shortage this year? It's been all over the news.

I never knew there were so many varieties of pumpkins. I think you need to plant many so that next year, you can cash in on the shortage if there is one! :o)

We don't know anything about pumpkins either but the Cinderella ones sound nice. Maybe you could try one or two varieties this year and see what you think. Good luck.

Hi - thanks for finding us at Petunia's Garden. I love growing pumpkins and cooking with them! But only one - no way! Click on my label for pumpkins and you can see some others besides the RVDE.

I grow the RVDE for its cuteness. It produces ALOT of pumpkin meat. More than I use at one time (but you can freeze it also). I found they didn't keep as long during the winter as others. Many like them.

The small sugar pumpkins are a perfect size and keep well. I'm told they are related/or taste like a butternut squash.

Snackjacks are nice for keeping, cooking and roasted seed. They are hybrids, though. I'm having trouble finding seed lately.

I traveled for holidays so hadn't baked a pie yet. I did just make pumpkin butter a few days ago. I like the consistency & taste of fresh pumpkin over canned...

Enjoy! Paula

I wish I could help you, but I know nothing about pumpkins. Here in AZ we can't grow much. However, I am now craving pumpkin pie... sigh, here goes the New Years Resolution!
